Sidearmor Light Holster and XTI Procyon Light Review

December 4th, 2008

This is my second day wearing the Sidearmor Light Holster for my Glock-21 with an Insight XTI Procyon light and I like it a lot.

At first I was concerned about the weight and mass of this set up and if the holster would move around much during normal use.  Using my kitchen scale the combination of a loaded pistol, light and holster add up to 3 lb 3.4oz (the holster and belt slide weighs only 7oz).

I wear a Wilderness Tactical Instructor Belt, 1.75” wide with the 5-Stich for added stiffness.  This combination holds everything snug to my hip with no detectable movement and no discomfort.  Once you strap everything on, the weight just disappears.  I think the new one piece belt slide Sidearmor designed helps this combination work well too.

The adjustable tension setting allows me to dial in just the right amount of holster grip on the Glock and light.  With the adjustable canting of the holster on the belt slide you can expect to become an expert at taking your holster on and off your belt while you play with different cant angles for your individual tastes.  I’d recommend starting out at vertical or with a slight forward cant.  Surprisingly a more vertical cant with a light holster works much easier for me in presenting the pistol than the more forward cant that I use with a non-light holster.  I also found that positioning the light holster a bit more forward on my hip helps make this combination work great!

The Insight XTI Procyon LED Light is impressive.  I have been using the Surfire X200 and it is a good tactical LED light.  The Insight Procyon comes in a slightly more compact package and its switch system is easier to use than the Surfire.  Plus in addition to the normal light options of constant on and momentary on, the XTI has a strobe setting, by simply pressing the momentary switch quickly twice.  The XTI light output is super.  It not only has a brighter center beam but the beam additionally puts out a circle of illumination that helps you see a wider field of view than I’ve experienced in other pistol mounted lights.  Everything fits easily and tightly on the Glock accessory rail and stays that way after many practice rounds.  It’s a solid product with great performance.

The Sidearmor Glock Light Holster with the Insight XTI Procyon are a great combination.

The Insight H2X Arcturus Handheld Tactical Light

H2X Arcturus

H2X Arcturus

Arcturus; among the very brightest of stars

H2X Arcturus; among the very brightest designed hand held tactical lights.  This is an impressive light.

Starting with the weight and feel of the light; it is substantial without being too big or heavy.  The rugged hard coat anodized aluminum exterior over the knurled grip gives me the confidence it will function as needed and it just feels good in my hand.  It has the look of a serious piece of gear and it is.

The light output is impressive when compared against similar products and it has the durability of having a LED.  The dimming feature to modify the light as needed with the single On/Off/Mode button has become more useful than I expected.  This feature is great for map reading or up close work where 120+ Lumens would just about blind me. I’d recommend adding the red filter to preserve your night vision for close work and to minimize your light signature for stealth.  Another suggestion is to point the light away from your intended work surface and dim it down first, otherwise the bounce back to your eyes is significant when you turn it on and you’ll understand first hand how a tactical light can be so disorienting.  Along those lines, the strobe feature really got my attention; it will disrupt or stop most people’s forward movement towards the light in the dark – at least with all my test subjects.  Plus just buy a mirrored ball and you are set to be the light show for a Retro Disco Nights gathering.
